On the Graffiti Tip
In the past few weeks many graffiti based topics have popped into my life, so I thought that I would let you know about them.
Four hands, one heart and one brain:
Hailing from San Paulo, identical twins and graffiti artists, Gustavo and Otavio Pandolfo are called Os Gemeos (pronounced "ose zhe'-mee-ose" -- the twins in Portuguese). Using a kind of twin mental telepathy and a need to express themselves, Os Gemeos create amazing art filled with folkloric figures. Most of their work can be seen on the streets of San Paulo. Luckily for us Os Gemeos are having their first solo show in the NYC, Cavaleiro Marginal at Deitch Projects (76 Grand Street) through April 2nd. You wont believe that the majority of the painting is done with spray paint the lines are so fine.
Writers choice:
Montana Colors, otherwise known as MTNMTN, caters to the graffiti community with their large color palette -- 174 colors! Kapi and Mookie, two writers from Barcelona couldnt find the colors that they wanted. So they approached Jordi, who was working at a paint company at that time and together they started Montana. The paint comes in two sizes: alien a smaller, low-pressure can which is used for details and the larger can, hardcore which offers more coverage.
The graffiti site:
12ozProphet started out in 1993 as a self-published zine, reflecting who and where the publishers were at the time. In 1996 12ozprophet went digital and has become the main stay for the international graffiti community. Its forums bring graffiti writers from all over the world together. People discuss styles, tags, paints and whatever else. The rule is that you arent supposed to self-promote. If you are lucky other people post flicks of fresh work and then, your peeps give props. If your work is good, it may end up on the site.
The writers book:
Although it came out last year, Peter Sutherlands book, Autograf is still a whos whos of the NYC graffiti scene. A pictorial essay, it puts the face, or at least to part of a face to the tag. Sutherland took photos of each of the artists in the book and then had them tag their photo, giving their seal of approval.

Gorgeously-shot by Brooklyn-based cinematographer Brian Rigney Hubbard over five days on a farm in Massachusetts, the story follows a cadre of young men through the lush landscape as they pick cotton, shear sheep and gather ink from an octopus (pictured),...

Steve Powers: Street Art - Do you really need a white cube to show art? Is a great painting sitting on a street corner still a great painting? Can someone make something new happen in an art world where everybody has seen everything already? Steve Powers, armed with enough gallery and museum credentials to stuff a resume (he's a graffiti writer, author of The Art Of Getting Over and...
Victor Vasarely Op-Art Watch - Op-Art pioneer Victor Vasarely was profoundly influenced by Bauhaus, constructivism, cubism and surrealism. He began his unmistakable geometric abstraction from the 1930's through his heyday of optical illusion of the sixties and seventies. Late in his career, Bulova produced a series of wristwatches with Vasarely's artwork on the dial and engraved signature on the caseback. Very difficult to find, one of the more interesting...
Malcolm Venville: Lucha Loco - I never really took to Hulk Hogan and his friends when I was a kid, preferring instead the low-rent British version of wrestling. Big Daddy in a leotard and top-hat was about as colorful as it got though, so looking at Malcolm Venville's vivid portraits of masked Mexican Lucha Libre wrestlers makes me feel like I missed out big time. The British photographer and...
Karl Escritt's Live Painting - Karl Escritt is a Kyoto-based graphic artist who's been quietly making a name for himself as an accomplished designer of flyers, posters and t-shirts for the underground music scene in this Englishman's adopted Japan. Cal Lane and Elissa Levy: Purfle - Rife with paradox, the finely-detailed metal sculptures by Cal Lane (Wheel Barrel, 2005 pictured) and Elissa Levy's military-themed felt pieces, mix delicate filigree with more substantial materials and topics. Their complimentary work is the subject of a show called "Purfle" that opens at Foley Gallery in NYC tomorrow, 2 November 2006 and runs through 6 January 2007.
